The Student Perspective: A Letter From Honors English

Dear future students,

Thuy’s English class is hard. I don’t believe there is a better word for this class. However, even though there are times during the semester that you feel really busy, it is fun. This class is fun. To be completely honest I don’t think I have learned so much in an english class before, that being a good thing.

I will give you tips on how to “handle” this class, and so I will. Something that definitely saved me a couple times was being able to admit that there was too much on my plate and I needed an extra day or so to re-establish my priorities again. There are constant assignments, projects and lists to review before the due date, so if you need an extra day on that one task, it’s ok to ask for that. Knowing this helped me keep up and do my best during class and with assignments outside of class.

Drills are never fully addressed during class but are definitely present. During parts of the semester it might seem as though you’re learning the same thing over and over again. Think of this as a drill. The more you practice that one thing, the easier it will become to do and understand. Before you know it, it’ll become second nature. To know I would not forget these tricks in literature and being able to realize that, made these drills more enjoyable to learn.

Probably one of the most important things to keep in mind is to stay on top of, and ahead of your assignments. You usually have several days till an assignment is due and trust me it is a lot more rewarding to finish them before the due date and have an extra day of no assignment due. I say this as someone who often finishes their assignments at the last minute. Saying this, you shouldn't rush your assignments. Everyone of them has a purpose in what you are learning and will be useful to you in the following assignments.

Without fail, you’ll learn a lot in Thuy’s class. Similarly, you’ll have a lot of fun. Creative writing, collaged projects, fascinating novels, perplexing poems and complex characters will fuel you throughout the year. There was not a moment in this class that I was not captivated by what I was learning and how Thuy taught it. This class is tough but it is so, so worth it. If you are able to look past its heavy workload and see the intricate patterns in the class, it will undoubtedly make everything a bit more colorful.

Best,

Emily K.
